Mentorship is a Two-Way Street

Mentorship is a two-way street.
Over a decade ago, I signed up for a yearlong mentorship program through Generation One Academy, a school focused on elementary students and after-school enrichment. That’s how I met Jarren Harrell.
What began as a 12-month commitment has grown into a 12-year friendship.
Not long ago, Jarren asked me why I’ve kept investing in him all these years. The answer was simple: every time we talk—whether I share an experience, a principle, or a challenge—he acts on it.
From the beginning, he was a curious kid. He’d ask thoughtful questions, listen closely, and then circle back to share how he’d applied what we discussed. That pattern hasn’t changed.
Recently, as he prepared for his first summer internship, I recommended two of my favorite books - Extreme Ownership and Atomic Habits. Within two weeks, he had finished the first, started the second, and was already putting the lessons into practice. That kind of responsiveness—the hunger to grow and the willingness to act—makes mentorship deeply rewarding. The ROI is real.
Investors say money flows where it’s appreciated. I’ve found the same is true with time and energy. I only have so much of it, so I give it to people who choose action—not just talk. Even when their actions lead to failure—especially when they do—I’m eager to reinvest. Because over time, that’s where real transformation happens.
If you find someone willing to invest in you, show them through your actions how that investment is paying off.
Jarren graduates college in December. I’ll be there - and I can’t wait to see what he does next!
